How Fall Detection works

The fall detection process uses a combination of sensors and a time-based alert sequence:
Detection: The device's internal 3D sensors, including an accelerometer, monitor a worker's movement and orientation. It detects a serious fall by identifying a sudden change in altitude followed by a rapid impact.
  1. Pre-alarm cancellation window: To prevent false alarms, the device will first initiate a brief countdown (typically around 10 to 20 seconds). During this time, the device will vibrate and emit an audible prompt, "Fall has been detected. Click the SOS button to Stop." This gives the user time to cancel the alarm if it was not a true emergency.
  2. Alert escalation: If the user does not cancel the pre-alarm, the Mercari device enters emergency mode and immediately sends out a series of alerts.
    • SMS alerts: An emergency text message with the worker's location is sent to all pre-programmed emergency contacts.
    • Automated voice calls: The device can also be programmed to automatically start calling the emergency contacts in a pre-set sequence until someone answers.
    • Two-way communication: Once an emergency contact answers, the device enables hands-free, two-way voice communication through its built-in microphone and speaker, allowing the worker to provide more details about their situation if possible.
